On the 16th and 17th of May 2016, Lisbon will host the International Conference "University, Culture and the City", a joint organization of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and UNICA - Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe.

Contemporary cultural challenges are attracting much attention in today's political debate. The notion of culture, in its various understandings, is omnipresent. European cities, now even more than ever, are magnets for multi-ethnic and multi-cultural amigration and become increasingly diverse in ethnic and cultural terms.

While Universities define themselves as knowledge institutions that are responsible for the development of science and technology and the shaping of critical thinking, they no longer remain isolated from environmental and socio-cultural challenges. At the same time, university students are becoming increasingly mobile and not any more bound to a single place and institution. Erasmus experience has proven that learning is a also a cultural process, which calls for Universities to strengthen their relationships with the Cities and become partners in the City's cultural (re)development.

The Conference will aim to collect practices and experiences in embedding Culture inside Universities, as well as showcase examples of successful cooperation between Universities and Cultural Institutions. The involvement of Universities as agents in the development of cultural activities in the Cities will also be one of the main discussion topics.
